3D TV Sales Help TV Manufactures

Large television company’s such as Sony, LG Electronics, Samsung, and Onida are reporting a growth in the flat panel TV arena these days from around 60%-70%. This growth includes LED, LCD, and plasmas where numbers are expected to double in sales.

Business leader of the home entertainment LG India, Rohit Pandit, explains that the small base of the flat panel category will speed up growth for the next 3 years. He went on to say, “Premium TV segment has been growing by more than 100 per cent and is likely to grow by same rate for the next 3 years. As of today, every year new technologies are being introduced. In 2009 LED was launched followed by 3D Full LED in 2010. Hence upper price points are and will be maintained due to new technology advent.”

India’s color television market is of 13.5 million units where 3 million are flat panels. Last year only 1.5 million flat panel units were sold which goes to show how rapidly the demand for the technology has increased. With the increase in such technology, Sony India has high hopes for another niche, 3D TV and have invested in 3D related products.

GM-Marketing of Sony India said, Tadato Kimura, “We expect 30 per cent revenue contribution from 3D products by 2012. In March this year we launched a line up of Monolithic LED TVs which have shown excellent sales growth and catapulted Sony to No. 1 position in the Flat Panel display market.”

“For the last couple of years prices of LCD TVs have been falling by 30 per cent year-on-year and future volume gains will lead to further price drops,” he added.

Vice President of Onida explained that LED televisions will do better than LCDs due to their being more environmentally friendly. As a result LED has a 10% share of the 3 million units expected to be sold.
